Product Details

Cincinnati Recipe Chili Mix is the seasoning packet for Cincinnati-style chili, the thin, finely textured meat sauce served over spaghetti or hot dogs rather than eaten from a bowl. The blend leans on warm sweet spices with onion, garlic and paprika and medium heat, following the Skyline family recipe named on the packet. One packet plus a can of tomato paste, water and ground beef makes 2 quarts.

This set holds 6 packets, 2.25 oz (63.8 g) each, 13.5 oz (383 g) in all, enough for six 2-quart batches. Unlike most chili seasonings, the beef is simmered raw in the liquid instead of browned first, which gives the fine, crumbly texture Cincinnati chili is known for.

Ingredients

Spice, Salt, Dehydrated Onion, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Dextrose, Corn Syrup Solids, Less Than 2% Silicon Dioxide (Anticaking), Soybean Oil.

Directions & Storage

Combine one packet with one 6 oz can of tomato paste and 6 cups of water in a large pot. Add 1 to 1.5 lb of lean ground beef without browning it and break it up with a fork until fine. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring now and then, until the chili thickens to your liking. Makes 2 quarts.

Serve over spaghetti with shredded mild cheddar for a 3-way, add beans or chopped onion for a 4-way or 5-way, or spoon over hot dogs in buns for cheese coneys.

Store unopened packets in a cool, dry pantry. Refrigerate cooked chili within 2 hours and use within 3 to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Is this the same as Skyline chili?
It is not made by the Skyline restaurant chain, but the packet says the blend follows the Skyline family recipe, and the result is very close to what you get at the counter.
Why does the recipe say not to brown the beef?
Simmering raw beef in the liquid breaks it into fine crumbles, which is the texture Cincinnati chili is known for. Browned beef stays in chunks and makes a different dish.
How many servings does one packet make?
One packet makes 2 quarts, about 6 to 8 servings over spaghetti or enough chili for a dozen coneys.
Can I make it in a slow cooker?
Yes. Mix the packet, tomato paste, water and raw beef in the cooker, break up the meat with a fork and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, leaving the lid ajar near the end if it needs to thicken.
Can I use ground turkey or a meatless crumble?
Yes. The mix itself is vegan, so turkey, chicken or plant-based crumbles all work. Turkey makes a lighter chili, so add it the same way without browning.
