Product Details

Barilla Manicotti are large ridged pasta tubes made from durum wheat semolina, meant to be stuffed with ricotta, spinach or meat and baked under sauce. The tubes cook to a firm, slightly chewy texture and hold their shape in the oven. They are the classic choice for stuffed baked pasta dinners.

Each 8 oz (227 g) box holds about 14 tubes, enough for 4 to 5 servings once filled. Manicotti are larger and sturdier than cannelloni sheets you roll yourself, and the open tubes fill easily with a spoon or piping bag.

Ingredients

Semolina (Wheat), Durum Wheat Flour, Vitamins/Minerals: Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Iron (Ferrous Sulfate), Vitamin B1 (Thiamine Mononitrate), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Folic Acid.

Directions & Storage

Bring 4 to 6 quarts of water to a boil and salt to taste. Add the pasta and boil uncovered for 7 minutes, stirring gently now and then. Drain and lay the tubes on a sheet pan lightly coated with cooking spray so they do not stick, then fill and bake according to your recipe.

To make ahead, assemble the manicotti, cover and refrigerate at 40 F or below for up to 48 hours, then bake at 425 F for 35 minutes covered and 15 minutes uncovered. To freeze, assemble unbaked in a dish that is both freezer safe and oven safe, cover tightly and freeze. Thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours, bake as above and rest 10 minutes before serving.

Store the unopened box in a cool, dry place. Keep leftover dry tubes in a sealed container.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

How many manicotti are in the box?
About 14 tubes, which fills a 9 by 13 inch baking dish and serves 4 to 5 people.
Do I have to boil the tubes before filling them?
Barilla's directions call for a 7 minute boil so the pasta cooks evenly. Some recipes fill the tubes dry and bake longer with extra sauce, but the boiled tubes are easier to fill and have a better texture.
What is the difference between manicotti and cannelloni?
Manicotti are ridged tubes you stuff as they are. Cannelloni are usually flat pasta sheets rolled around the filling. The same ricotta or meat fillings work in both.
How do I fill the tubes without tearing them?
Let the boiled tubes cool on the sheet pan first. Spoon the filling into a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a corner cut off, then pipe into each tube from one end.
Can I freeze a tray of manicotti?
Yes. Freeze it assembled but unbaked, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and bake as directed. Baked leftovers also freeze well for a few weeks.
