Product Details

Better Than Bouillon vegetarian bases are concentrated pastes made from cooked vegetables, mushrooms and roasted garlic rather than dehydrated cubes, so they dissolve fast and taste like slow-simmered stock. One teaspoon in a cup of boiling water makes broth, and a spoonful stirred into rice, gravy, soup or a pan sauce adds depth. This pack covers six flavors: No Chicken, No Beef, Seasoned Vegetable, Mushroom, Roasted Garlic and Italian Herb.

The set holds six 8 oz (227 g) jars, 48 oz (1.36 kg) in all, and each jar makes about 38 cups (9.5 quarts) of broth. All six are vegetarian, and No Chicken, No Beef and Seasoned Vegetable are certified vegan, so the pack gives plant-based cooks meat-style, vegetable and aromatic bases in one order.

Directions & Storage

Dissolve 1 teaspoon of base in 8 fl oz (1 cup) of boiling water for broth, or 1.5 tablespoons per quart. One teaspoon equals one bouillon cube or one 8 oz can of broth. Stir a spoonful straight into soups, stews, rice, mashed potatoes, gravies and pan sauces to taste. Roasted Garlic and Italian Herb also work rubbed on vegetables or whisked into dressings and marinades.

Store unopened jars in a cool, dry pantry. Refrigerate after opening and use a clean, dry spoon each time. The paste stays soft and scoopable when cold, and an opened jar keeps in the refrigerator up to its best-by date.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Which jars are vegan?
No Chicken, No Beef and Seasoned Vegetable carry vegan certification. Roasted Garlic and Italian Herb list no animal ingredients but are not certified, and Mushroom Base is vegetarian only.
How does this compare to bouillon cubes?
The paste dissolves in seconds with no gritty bits, tastes like real stock rather than salt and yeast, and lets you measure half a teaspoon when you only want a hint of flavor. One jar replaces about 38 cubes.
What is the difference between Seasoned Vegetable and No Chicken?
Seasoned Vegetable is a tomato-tinted all-purpose vegetable stock. No Chicken is golden from turmeric and seasoned to mimic chicken broth, so it is the better pick for plant-based chicken noodle soup, gravy and rice.
Is it low sodium?
No. These are the regular full-salt bases. Better Than Bouillon sells a separate reduced sodium line if you need less salt.
Does it have to be refrigerated before opening?
No. Sealed jars sit in the pantry. Once opened, keep the jar in the refrigerator.
Can I use Mushroom or Roasted Garlic base in risotto and pasta?
Yes. Dissolve Mushroom Base in the hot water you ladle into risotto, or whisk half a teaspoon of Roasted Garlic Base into pasta water, butter sauces or mashed potatoes for a deep roasted flavor without chopping garlic.
