Product Details

Bob's Red Mill Organic Creamy Buckwheat Hot Cereal is milled from raw, whole grain buckwheat groats. It cooks up into a smooth, creamy hot cereal with a nutty flavor. Top it with fruit, nuts, honey or cinnamon, or go savory with butter and salt.

Each 18 oz (510 g) bag holds about 12 servings. It is a milled cereal, not whole groats or roasted kasha, and it is different from wheat farina cereals.

Whole grain organic buckwheat.

Microwave, 1 serving: mix 1/4 cup cereal with 3/4 cup water and a pinch of salt in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring now and then, then let it rest 2 minutes.

Pressure multi-cooker, 4 servings: combine 1 cup cereal, 3 cups water and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Seal the lid and cook at high pressure for 2 to 3 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then stir.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Is buckwheat a kind of wheat?
No. Despite the name, buckwheat is the seed of a plant related to rhubarb and sorrel, not a grass, and it contains no gluten.
Does it taste like kasha?
Milder. Kasha is buckwheat that has been roasted, which gives it a strong toasty flavor. This cereal is milled from raw groats, so it tastes nutty and earthy but gentler, closer to a whole grain farina.
Can I cook it in milk?
Yes. Use the same ratio and stir more often, since milk scorches on the bottom of the pot more easily than water. Half milk and half water is a good middle ground.
Why did mine come out lumpy?
The cereal went into the liquid too fast or was not whisked as it went in. Pour it in a slow stream while whisking, and keep stirring for the first minute.
Can I make it ahead?
Yes. Cooked cereal keeps 4 days in the fridge. It sets firm when cold, so reheat it with a splash of milk or water and stir until smooth.
How is this different from whole buckwheat groats?
Groats are the whole seed and cook up as separate chewy grains, like rice. This cereal is the same groats milled into a coarse meal, so it cooks faster and turns creamy instead.
