Two things to know before you buy. First, this is whole seed, not meal — flax passes through largely undigested unless it's ground, so if you want the omega-3s and the fibre you need to grind it (a coffee grinder does it in seconds). Buying whole and grinding as you go keeps it fresher than buying pre-ground. If you'd rather skip that step, look for flaxseed meal instead.

Second, golden versus brown is a varietal difference rather than a processing one. Bob's Red Mill sell both and treat them as nutritionally comparable; golden is the milder-tasting of the two.

Flax oil goes rancid, so the resealable bag matters — Bob's Red Mill recommend keeping it refrigerated or frozen once opened. Read the bag before use.
