Product Details

Cream of coconut is the sweetened coconut base that tropical drinks are built on, and it is not the same thing as coconut cream or coconut milk. Those two are unsweetened and made for cooking, and substituting either one is the usual reason a homemade piña colada comes out thin and watery. Coco Real is the sweetened kind, blending coconut with cane sugar into a thick, pourable puree that carries both the flavor and the body.

The squeeze bottle does more work than it looks like. The traditional can sets into a solid layer that has to be scraped out and stirred smooth before you can measure anything, while this one pours from a flip cap and reseals between drinks.

A 22 oz bottle covers roughly twenty blended drinks. Past the piña colada it belongs in a painkiller, in coquito, swirled into iced coffee, or shaken with pineapple and lime for a version with no alcohol at all. Bakers use it in cake soaks and frostings.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Can I use coconut milk instead of cream of coconut?
Not directly. Coconut milk is unsweetened and far thinner, so a pina colada built on it comes out watery and flat. To get close, simmer a cup of coconut milk with about half a cup of sugar until it thickens and cool it, which is essentially making cream of coconut from scratch. Even then the body is lighter than the bottled version.
What is the difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream?
Cream of coconut is sweetened; coconut cream is not. Cream of coconut is coconut blended with cane sugar into a thick, pourable puree made for drinks and desserts, while coconut cream is the unsweetened thick layer that separates out of coconut milk and is a cooking ingredient. Substituting coconut cream gives a drink with no sugar and a thin, separating texture. The two names are nearly identical and the cans sit side by side, which is why the mistake is so common.
Is the squeeze bottle the same product as the can?
It is the same kind of ingredient, sweetened cream of coconut, in a different package. A can sets into a solid layer that has to be scraped out and stirred smooth before anything can be measured, while the bottle pours from a flip cap and reseals between drinks. For anyone making one or two drinks at a time rather than a batch, that is the practical difference.
How much cream of coconut goes in a pina colada?
The standard build is 2 oz white rum, 2 oz pineapple juice and 1 oz cream of coconut, blended with about a cup of ice. Some bars push the cream of coconut to 1.5 oz for a richer, sweeter drink. At 1 oz per drink a 22 oz bottle covers roughly twenty blended drinks.
What else is cream of coconut used for besides pina coladas?
It supplies both the sweetener and the body in a painkiller, a Bushwacker and coquito, and it goes into iced coffee and into shaken pineapple and lime drinks with no alcohol at all. Bakers use it in cake soaks, in frostings and in coconut cream pie, where it delivers sugar and coconut flavour in one ingredient. Because it is already sweetened, cut the sugar elsewhere in the recipe.
How do I make cream of coconut at home?
Simmer one part sugar with roughly two parts coconut cream or full-fat coconut milk, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens slightly, then cool it. The result is thinner than the bottled version and it separates in the refrigerator, so warm and stir it before measuring. Homemade keeps about a week refrigerated.
