Hot Cinnamon Spice is the blend Harney & Sons is known for. John Harney put it together in the early 1980s, and it has been the company's best seller ever since, the tea most drinkers discover the brand through. This is two tins of 30 sachets, so sixty cups, for the house that goes through it steadily.

Three different cinnamons carry the cup, with orange peel and sweet cloves filling it out, which makes it rounder and more layered than a plain cinnamon black tea. The spices read as sweet on their own, so most people drink it as it comes; the sweetness is a flavour of clove and citrus rather than sugar. The sachets hold whole-leaf tea and are cut for a generous mug.

It takes milk well, brews strong enough to serve over ice in summer, and is the tin that tends to come out on a cold afternoon when coffee would be too much.

Does it contain caffeine?
Yes. The base is black tea, so a cup carries caffeine in the same range as any other black tea. The cinnamon, orange peel and cloves contribute none of their own. If you drink it in the evening, that is worth knowing.
Is there a caffeine free version of this blend?
There are two, and neither is what is in this tin. Harney & Sons makes Decaf Hot Cinnamon, the same style of blend on a decaffeinated black tea base, and Herbal Hot Cinnamon Spice, built on rooibos and naturally caffeine free. This tin is the caffeinated black tea original.
How do I brew it, and how big a cup does one sachet make?
Harney & Sons calls for water at a full boil, 212 degrees F, and a steep of five minutes. One sachet is measured for a 12 oz mug rather than a small teacup, which is part of why it stands up to milk and to ice. Steeping well past five minutes mainly adds astringency rather than more spice.
What is the difference between these sachets and the boxed teabags of the same tea?
The blend is the same; the leaf grade and the packaging are not. Harney & Sons puts whole leaf into the pyramid sachets, where it has room to open in the water, and uses broken leaf and smaller particles in the flat paper teabags. That is what the price difference reflects. The teabags brew faster and are the cheaper way to drink the same blend.
What are the sachets made of, and are they compostable?
Most Harney & Sons sachets are made from an industrially compostable material derived from sugarcane, but Hot Cinnamon is the one stated exception in their line, so these are not the compostable version. If packaging material matters to you, the flat paper teabags of this same blend are unbleached paper. It is worth deciding which trade-off you want before buying two tins.
