Product Details

Herb-Ox beef bouillon comes as a granulated powder in individual foil packets, fifty to a box. One packet dissolved in a cup of boiling water makes one cup of beef broth, so a box works out to roughly fifty cups, a little over three quarts, in a package that takes up less shelf room than a single carton.

The single-serve packet is the reason to keep it. You measure nothing and open only what the job needs, which suits a mug of hot broth on its own, a small pot of soup, or a recipe calling for a cup of stock when there is no carton in the house.

It also works dry, tipped straight from the packet. Cooks stir one into the water for rice, barley or couscous, whisk it into pan drippings for gravy, add it to a stew or braise for more backbone, or scatter it over potatoes before roasting. The flavour leans roasted and savoury, with hints of herbs and vegetables sitting behind the beef.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Is one packet the same as a bouillon cube or a spoonful of granulated bouillon?
Yes. Herb-Ox treats the three formats as equivalent: one packet equals one cube equals one teaspoon of granulated bouillon. If a recipe calls for a cube or a teaspoon of granules, one packet does the same job. The difference between the formats is convenience and portioning, not strength.
Can I use this in place of beef broth in a recipe?
Yes. Herb-Ox states that its bouillon can be substituted for broth, and once dissolved the two are used the same way. Match the volume of broth the recipe asks for. Taste before adding any further salt, since one packet carries 1,040 mg of sodium.
Is there a sodium free version?
Yes, but it is a separate product rather than a variation of this box. These regular beef packets contain 1,040 mg of sodium each. Herb-Ox also makes Sodium Free Granulated Beef Bouillon Packets, built on potassium chloride instead of salt, with a different ingredient list and no sodium. If you are cooking for a sodium-restricted diet, that is the box you want, not this one.
Is it gluten free?
Hormel lists Herb-Ox beef bouillon in packet, cube and granulated form among its products formulated without gluten-containing ingredients. There is no certified gluten free seal on the box, and Hormel's own advice is to read the label on the package you receive, since formulations can change.
Is it vegetarian?
No. The beef bouillon is made with real beef ingredients and is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The sodium free beef version is not an alternative either, since it contains gelatin. Herb-Ox does make a vegetable bouillon cube if you want a meat-free option.
Does it have to be dissolved in boiling water?
Boiling water is the fastest and most reliable way to dissolve the granules and is what the package directs. Herb-Ox also says its bouillon can be prepared in the microwave or dissolved in cold water, though cold water takes longer and can leave a little grit. If you regularly need bouillon to go into cold liquid, Herb-Ox makes a separate Cold Water Dissolve line for that.
