Lorna Doone is Nabisco's shortbread cookie, on shelves since 1912 and named, by most tellings, after the heroine of R. D. Blackmore's Victorian novel. This is the caterer's format rather than the cookie-jar one: thirty sealed 1 oz sleeves, four small golden squares in each.

The appeal is how plain it is. A dry, sandy, buttery crumb, sweet in a restrained way, which is why it sits so well beside coffee, tea or a glass of milk and why it has stayed on menus for a century.
