Product Details

This is a sauce rather than a thin flavoring syrup, and the difference shows the moment you pour it. Monin's dark chocolate is thick enough to cling to the inside of a glass and hold a spiral on whipped cream, where a syrup would sink straight to the bottom and vanish into the drink. The flavor leans dark and cocoa-forward rather than candy sweet.

The 12 oz bottle is a squeeze bottle, which is the format cafe counters use for a reason: a short squeeze into the base of a cup, then espresso and steamed milk stirred through, and you have a mocha with real depth. It behaves the same over ice, and blends cleanly into frappes and milkshakes.

Away from coffee it earns its keep as a finishing sauce, drizzled over ice cream, waffles and pancakes, or ribboned around a dessert plate. A good one to keep beside the espresso machine if you make cafe drinks at home.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Is it dairy free? There is no milk in the ingredient list.
No. Monin flag this product for milk even though no dairy ingredient appears on the panel, which normally points to shared equipment rather than a recipe ingredient. If you avoid dairy by choice the ingredient list is the thing to read; if you avoid it because of an allergy, treat this as containing milk.
Does it need refrigerating once opened?
No. Monin state that this sauce does not require refrigeration and should be kept at room temperature, away from heat and out of direct sunlight.
How long does it keep after opening?
Monin give their sauces roughly 90 to 180 days once opened with the cap back on, held between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit somewhere dry. Fit a pump or a pour spout in place of the cap and that window shortens to around 30 to 60 days, since the bottle is no longer sealed between uses.
Will a pump fit this bottle?
Monin supply a pump with their 64 oz sauce bottles rather than the 12 oz, so no pump comes with this size. For reference, Monin sauce pumps dispense 1/2 fl oz per stroke, which matches the serving size, while their syrup pumps dispense 1/4 fl oz.
What is the difference between a Monin sauce and a Monin syrup?
Sauces are thick and opaque and are built to hold their body in milk — they are what goes into a mocha or gets drizzled over a finished drink. Syrups are thin and pour like water, and dissolve into a drink rather than sitting in it. They are not interchangeable by volume either, which is why the sauce and syrup pumps are sized differently.
Is it gluten free and kosher?
Monin list their gourmet sauces as gluten free and non-GMO, and state that all Monin flavors are certified kosher. Monin also list this one as having no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners.
