Product Details

Morton Canning and Pickling Salt is pure, fine-grain salt with no iodine and no anti-caking agents. Because nothing is added, it dissolves fully and leaves pickle brine clear instead of cloudy, and it will not darken pickles or settle as sediment in the jar. It is the salt to use for cucumber pickles, sauerkraut, fermented vegetables, brines and canning recipes that call for pickling salt.

This single box holds 4 lb (1.81 kg) of salt, about 1,200 quarter-teaspoon servings, with a lift tab spout. Unlike table salt, which has iodine and anti-caking agents that cloud brine, and unlike kosher salt, whose large flakes measure differently by volume, this fine salt measures like the salt most canning recipes were written for.

Directions & Storage

Use the amount your canning or pickling recipe calls for, measured level. Stir into water or vinegar until fully dissolved before pouring over vegetables. It also works for everyday cooking, baking, marinating and brining meat.

Store the box closed in a dry place. Salt does not spoil, but without anti-caking agents it will clump if it gets damp, so keep it away from steam and transfer to an airtight jar in humid kitchens.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Can I use table salt or kosher salt for pickles instead?
Table salt has iodine and anti-caking agents that cloud the brine and can darken pickles. Kosher salt works but its flakes are larger, so a cup of kosher salt weighs less than a cup of this salt and recipes will come out under-salted unless you weigh it.
Is it iodized?
No. It is uniodized salt with nothing added.
How much salt is in the box?
4 lb, about 7 cups of fine salt. A typical quart of pickles uses 1 to 2 tablespoons, so one box covers a full canning season.
Can I use it for regular cooking?
Yes. It is pure salt and tastes the same as table salt. Use it anywhere you would use fine salt, including baking.
Why did my salt clump?
There is no anti-caking agent, so it absorbs moisture from the air. Keep the box closed and dry, and break up clumps with a fork. It is still fine to use.
