Product Details

These are Oreo cookies already crushed for you: the same chocolate wafer and creme filling, broken down to a small, coarse crumb rather than a powder. It is the format bakeries, ice cream counters and restaurant kitchens buy by the case, and it removes the food processor step along with the uneven results that come from crushing whole cookies by hand.

The grind is what makes it work. It is fine enough to press into a pan with melted butter for a cheesecake base or a chocolate cream pie shell, and coarse enough to stay recognizable as cookie when folded into soft serve, buttercream or a no-bake icebox cake. The small pieces also travel up a milkshake straw, which is why shake counters keep a tub within reach.

For a home baker who makes cookies-and-cream desserts more than once a year, it earns its place. Rim a glass, ring the base of a layer cake, dust a tray of doughnuts, or scatter a handful over brownie batter before it goes in the oven.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Are these kosher, and are they dairy?
Oreo is certified kosher by the Orthodox Union and carries a dairy designation. The Orthodox Union has stated that the standard Oreo varieties do not contain dairy ingredients, and that the dairy designation reflects the equipment the cookies are produced on rather than anything in the recipe. The practical consequence is that these crumbs are not pareve, so if you need pareve for a meat meal, this is not the product for you.
How should I store an opened bag?
Somewhere cool, out of direct sunlight, and above all dry. Crumbs take on humidity far faster than whole cookies do because so much more surface is exposed, and once they go soft they will not crisp back up. Roll the bag down tight or decant into an airtight container at room temperature; a fridge is a damp place and works against you here.
Can I use these instead of graham cracker crumbs in a crust?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people buy crumbs by the bag. Substitute measure for measure for graham cracker or digestive crumbs in a press-in crust, bound with melted butter. The result is darker, more chocolatey and noticeably sweeter than a graham base, so with a very sweet filling it is worth tasting the crumb mixture and cutting the sugar the recipe adds.
Will the crumbs stay crunchy once they are mixed into something?
Not indefinitely. Any dry crumb softens once it sits in something wet. Where crunch is the point, on top of a frosted cake, through soft serve, around the rim of a glass, add them close to serving rather than hours ahead. Folded into a batter, a cheesecake or an ice cream base they are meant to soften, and that is fine.
