Product Details

Surya Brasil's Henna Cream is a semi-permanent, henna-based hair color that comes ready to use in a 2.37 oz tube, with no developer to measure and no two-part mixing. This one is the Light Brown shade.

The brand builds its formulas around plant material rather than synthetic colorants, pairing henna with botanicals such as amla, aloe vera and chamomile alongside Brazilian ingredients including acai, guarana and Brazil nut oil. It is a deposit-only color, which means the pigment coats the hair shaft rather than lifting the pigment already in it, so it will not take hair lighter than where it starts.

Henna behaves differently from conventional dye. What you see depends on your starting shade, your hair's porosity and texture, and how long the cream stays on, which is usually an hour or more. A strand test before a full application is standard practice, particularly on hair that has been chemically treated.

Questions About This Product

The things people actually want to know before they cook with it.

Will it cover grey hair?
Yes, it is formulated to cover grey. If you are more than about half grey, or your hair is porous, the brand's guidance is to leave it on for two hours or longer rather than the usual minimum, and to reapply more frequently than you would on hair without grey. Because the color only deposits, coverage on grey tends to build over repeat applications rather than arriving all at once with the first one.
How long does the color last?
The brand's figure for the Henna Cream is 10 to 12 shampoos. How quickly it fades in practice depends on how often you wash, how hot the water is and what shampoo you use. The same brand's Henna Powder holds longer at 20 to 30 shampoos, so if longevity matters more to you than the convenience of a ready-mixed cream, that is the version to look at.
Does it contain ammonia, peroxide or PPD?
No. The brand states this cream is free of ammonia and its derivatives, peroxide, PPD, parabens, resorcinol, EDTA, silicones, mineral oils and heavy metals. That is directly connected to why it cannot lighten hair: the chemistry that lifts existing pigment is precisely the chemistry that has been left out.
Is it all natural?
No, and the brand does not claim that it is. Alongside the henna and the plant extracts, the Henna Cream contains under 2.5% mild synthetic dyes, which is how the range offers fifteen shades rather than the narrow band of reds and coppers that pure henna can produce on its own. If you want a product with no synthetic dye in it at all, this is not that product.
Can I use it on hair that has already been dyed, permed or relaxed?
Yes. The brand states the Henna Cream is compatible with all chemical processes and can even be used on the same day as one. It still recommends a sensitivity test beforehand. Bear in mind that chemically treated hair is usually more porous, so it can grab color faster and end up darker than untreated hair at the same processing time.
Is one tube enough for my hair?
For short to medium hair, one tube is generally a single application. For long, thick hair the brand's own guidance is that you may need anywhere from one to two and a half bottles, so buy two if your hair is past your shoulders and dense. Cream you do not use will keep for up to a month if the tube is sealed tightly and stored somewhere cool and dark.
Should my hair be clean or dirty when I apply it?
Clean. Shampoo first, skip the conditioner entirely, then towel-dry so the hair is damp rather than wet. Conditioner and product buildup both sit between the cream and the hair shaft and blunt the result. This is the opposite of the advice that comes with some conventional dyes, which is why it trips people up.
Will it stain my skin, my towels or the bathroom?
It can transfer, yes. Wear gloves, keep one dark towel set aside for coloring rather than reaching for a good one, and wipe splashes off skin, tiles and grout straight away rather than leaving them to sit. Laying something down over the floor and the basin surround is worth the two minutes.
