Ferrara Torrone Nougat Candy, 18 Pieces, 7.62 oz
$14.99
Product Details
Torrone is the classic Italian nougat, whipped egg white and honey worked with toasted almonds, and Ferrara is the version most American families know by its small blue box. This one holds 18 pieces in the assorted mix of vanilla, lemon, and orange, cut into short bars in the soft, chewy style rather than the brittle Cremona type.
Each bar is wrapped on its own, and under the wrapper sits a sheet of ostia, the thin edible wafer paper that has backed torrone for centuries. You eat it along with the nougat. The single-piece wrapping is what makes the box useful as a passed sweet: set it out on a dessert tray, tuck pieces into a stocking, or put a few beside espresso after a long dinner.
Italians eat torrone at Christmas, alongside panettone at the close of the meal, and the sweet's origin story places it at the 1441 wedding banquet of Francesco Sforza in Cremona, which is part of why it still turns up at Italian American weddings and in favor boxes.
