Welch's Squeeze Bottle Concord Grape Jam, 22 oz

Concord is a grape variety, not a flavor name. Ephraim Wales Bull bred it in Concord, Massachusetts in the 1840s from native American vines, and it carries the musky, faintly wild note that grape growers call foxy. It is the taste most Americans mean when they say grape, and it comes from almost no other grape on earth. Welch's has been built on the variety since Thomas Welch first bottled the juice in 1869.

As a jam it lands darker and rounder than the juice does, with the fruit's own body behind the sweetness, and the 22 oz bottle is roughly what a sandwich-making household goes through in a school year.

Peanut butter is the default and always will be. Past that: a spoonful stirred into plain yogurt or oatmeal, the filling for thumbprint cookies and jam bars, and the sweet half of the old cocktail meatball sauce, where grape jam meets chili sauce in a slow cooker.
